Fast-rising dancehall act Popcaan has earned himself a remix with popular rapper Busta Rhymes for the song 'Only Man She Want'.
The original version of the song has been in the public domain since August. However, distribution for the remix began on Friday through Hapilos Entertainment's Johnny Wonder, who was also instrumental in securing the remix.
"Popcaan was at my office and it so happened that Busta called while Papi was here. They started to talk and Busta asked me to send him the track. About a week later, Busta sent me back the remix," he said, noting that the song was produced by So Unique Records.
It's doing well
Since being released on Friday, Wonder said: "It's doing well. People are picking it up and it only release Friday. It's only a couple of days."
Speaking with THE STAR, Popcaan said he met Busta Rhymes prior to speaking with him on the phone.
"So it was a simple link up. Busta respects dancehall and the song has been getting a lot of radio play in the US, and (he) has worked with many Jamaican artistes so it was a natural link," he said.
Although unofficial, Popcaan said there are also other remixes of Only Man She Want with Jim Jones and Lumidee.
Being his first major project with an international artiste, Popcaan said the remix will aid his career.
"It's a good look for my career right now, it's a great promotional tool because Busta is well known and it can help to get the song exposed more in the hip-hop market," he told THE STAR.
But the remix is not the only thing presently going well in Popcaan's career, as his mixtape Popcaan Yiy Change that was produced by TJ Records and Chromatic is also getting good reception.
"All the fans love it. It was a good experience recording it, lots of fun with fry yiy hot skulls in the studio. It got lots of downloads and it is in demand in the streets. It is a free mixtape so everyone can own a copy. We are giving away thousands in Jamaica but some people are selling it in the US and Canada. Big up to Creep and Niko of Chromatic and TJ Records," he said.
In addition, he said he has new releases like Get Gyal Easy that was produced by Dre Skull, No Yes Man and Stay Far for TJ Records and Nah Sell Out for Firelinks. He said he has also been recording with other producers like ZJ Chrome and Mario C.
And before summer, Popcaan has shows in Guyana, Suriname, Guadeloupe, Bahamas and Europe. Shows in Africa are also a possibility and he will be performing at local shows like Negril Spring Break, BritJam, Disturbance and Hapilos Teens later this year.
